James Carl Daly saved Myrtle E. Rivers from drowning, Lenore, Idaho, December 29, 1978. The sedan driven by Mrs. Rivers, 80, plunged into the Clearwater River and began sinking in the cold water. Daly, 21, logger, entered the river fully clothed and swam to where the automobile had sunk to the bottom in deep water but was being moved slowly downstream by the current. Reaching through a half-opened window, Daly grasped Mrs. Rivers and pulled her out. He then took her to the surface and towed her to the bank.
