James D. Cain rescued DeShawn D. Hill from burning, Richmond, Kentucky, February 4, 1996. DeShawn, 1, was in a crib in a second-floor bedroom of his family’s apartment after fire erupted in that room. Cain, 34, mason assistant, drove upon the scene and learned from others gathered there that DeShawn remained inside the burning building. Cain attempted entry first by mounting the front porch roof and breaking out a window to the bedroom, but heat and dense smoke forced him back to the ground. He then entered the apartment through its front door and went upstairs to the second floor. Unable to see in the dense smoke, Cain moved toward DeShawn by following his cries. He located DeShawn in the burning bedroom, then removed him from the crib and took him downstairs and outside to safety. DeShawn was severely burned and required extensive hospitalization. Cain recovered from having inhaled smoke.
