James D. Scannell, 20, woodworker, died attempting to save Mildred, 15, and Esther Goodman, 13, from drowning, Arlington, Massachusetts, December 27, 1918. Mildred and Esther broke through thin ice on a reservoir, where the water was 30 feet deep. Scannell ran 475 feet on the ice to a point near the hole and cast his overcoat to Mildred, but she did not take hold of it. He then stepped close to the hole, crouched, and extended his hand toward Mildred. The ice cracked under Scannell, and he began to step back, but he broke through the ice. Mildred and Esther then sank and were drowned. Scannell grasped the ice for support, but it broke, and he was drowned. 19306-1525
