James D. Studley, 29, forest products engineer, assisted in an attempt to save Esther M. Wepking and Arthur A. Harwood, both 23, from drowning, Madison, Wisconsin, April 24, 1921. (See case of MARGARET BRENNECKE.) Studley and a companion started to the rescue just before Miss Brennecke and Haugen. After the capsizing of the raft, Studley, who was a poor swimmer, grabbed a life preserver just before being submerged and held to the raft. He was thereafter submerged frequently but regained hold of the raft each time, aided by the life preserver, and was finally rescued by the men in the motorboat. 21359-1889
