James E. Crandall saved a man from drowning, Kenora, Ontario, June 5, 1985. After a 29-year-old man jumped from a bridge into the swift, cold water of the Winnipeg River, Crandall, 55, mechanical supervisor, jumped in after him. Crandall dived and found the man anchoring himself to a log on the bottom of the 20-foot-deep river. In an ensuing struggle, Crandall broke the man free and took him to the surface. As the man ceased struggling, Crandall swam with him about 100 feet toward the bank before tiring. The man then swam the rest of the way and was helped from the water by onlookers. Crandall swam to the bank and collapsed. Both men were hospitalized for hypothermia, and additionally Crandall suffered strained, chest muscles, from which he recovered. 60487-6990
