James E. Foster saved Vernon O. Eakle from drowning, Tennessee, Illinois, July 22, 1934. While swimming in Lake Foley, Eakle, 43, got into distress in deep water 25 feet from the bank. James’s father swam to him, was grasped, freed himself, and swam toward wadable water. James, 13, schoolboy, who was much lighter than Eakle, then waded from the opposite bank and swam in deep water 25 feet to Eakle. Eakle, while threshing blindly, struck James a blow on the shoulder, which caused James to be submerged. James rose, grasped Eakle’s hair, and then swam and towed him 20 feet to wadable water.
