James Edward Kampela rescued Marshell M. Rogalski from assault, Thunder Bay, Ontario, December 11, 1992. Ms. Rogalski, 26, was approaching her car, parked in the lot of a supermarket, when a deranged man, in a random attack, accosted her and began to stab her. Screaming, Ms. Rogalski was forced to the pavement. Kampela, 26, shipper and receiver, was sitting in his car, parked nearby, when he witnessed the assault. He immediately ran to the scene and, approaching the assailant, pushed him away from Ms. Rogalski. The assailant then swung his knife at Kampela. Kampela ordered the assailant to drop the weapon, and, after a moment’s hesitation, he did so. Ms. Rogalski fled to the supermarket, where she received emergency care before being taken to the hospital, where she was admitted for treatment of multiple stab wounds. Kampela detained the assailant until police arrived shortly and arrested him.
