James F. McGirr, 32, mine check-weigher, died attempting to save Malcolm M. Niceswanger, 14, schooIboy, from drowning, Glouster, Ohio, November 15, 1929. Malcolm fell from a bridge into the swollen waters of the Sunday Creek and drifted in the current. McGirr, who was heavily clothed, waded from the bank and then swam 80 feet to him. Malcolm grabbed McGirr and climbed upon his back. McGirr called for help, and they drifted about 130 feet. McGirr then began to sink, and Malcolm let go his hold of him. Malcolm was rescued by a man who swam from the bank to him. McGirr was drowned.
