James G. Scott helped to rescue Philip G. Menard from burning, Haverhill, Massachusetts, December 17, 1988. Menard, 22, was trapped inside his burning car after a highway accident. Hearing the crash, Scott, 40, personnel director, ran from a nearby house to the car. Attempting to open the driver’s door, which was jammed, Scott and another man shattered its window. Both men then extended their upper bodies through the window into the car and grasped Menard, who lay semi-conscious on the floor. Despite flames entering the car through its firewall, Scott and the other man pulled Menard through the window only moments before the car was engulfed in flames. Menard sustained a broken shoulder and burns. Scott recovered from minor cuts.
