James G. Wilson, Jr., helped to save Joanne C. Gordon from drowning, Chelsea, Massachusetts, September 29, 1953. While playing in a boat moored to a dock which extended 200 feet from the bank of Chelsea Creek, Joanne, 6, who could not swim, fell into deep water and repeatedly was submerged. Sighting Joanne through binoculars at his home, James, 14, schoolboy, ran 1,200 feet to the end of the dock. Meanwhile, Joanne had drifted 20 feet from the dock. Although tired, winded, and overheated from his run, James dived into the water fully clothed and swam to Joanne. He swung her onto his back and towed her six feet toward the dock but could make no further progress, becoming extremely tired. Two men who were good swimmers ran onto the dock, and one of them dived into the water and rose near James and Joanne. The man towed Joanne to the dock. James reached the dock and climbed from the water. Joanne had lost consciousness but was revived. Both recovered. 42988-3898
