James Gizzo died attempting to save Joseph J. Smith from drowning, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, April 8, 1973. When his sedan went off a wharf into the Allegheny River and began to sink in deep water, Smith, 43, milling machine operator was seen slumped over the front seat. Among those attracted was Gizzo, 29, short-order cook. He removed his jacket, jumped into the water, and swam to the automobile, which continued to sink. Gizzo called for a rope after trying to open a door of the sedan. A rope was obtained and thrown toward Gizzo, but it missed him. The rope was again thrown toward him; but Gizzo went under, as did the automobile. Smith and Gizzo drowned. 53331-6016
