James H. Dunham, Jr., 24, printer’s apprentice, attempted to save Joseph M. Kelly, 45, merchant, from drowning, Seaside Park, New Jersey, July 5, 1926. While Kelly was swimming in the Atlantic Ocean, he was carried by a current 800 feet from shore into water 20 feet deep. Dunham, who expressed doubt of his ability to render effective aid, swam from shore through very rough water for 875 feet but did not find Kelly. He swam back and forth trying to locate Kelly, became tired, and then tried to swim back to shore, but he was unable to make progress and became dazed. Later he was rescued by a lifeguard and two other swimmers. When he was brought to shore, he was unconscious, but he was revived. In the meantime Kelly was given some aid by another man and then swam to shore on a board. 26391-2227
