James H. Story assisted in an attempt to save Harry A. Bohrer from suffocation, Quinton, Oklahoma, August 11, 1924. Bohrer, 35, laborer, was overcome by gas exhausted by a gasoline engine located in the main entry of a mine 450 feet from the mouth of the mine. Story, 44, smelter, and another man were told of the accident by Bohrer’s companion, who had escaped from the mine slightly affected. They walked 300 feet in the entry from its mouth and found Bohrer. The engine was still running. The man with Story immediately was affected by gas and started out of the entry but fell unconscious 250 feet from the mouth of the mine. Story dragged Bohrer 40 feet toward the entrance and then became so much affected by the gas that he was compelled to leave him. He crawled about 20 feet farther and became unconscious but was later rescued. Bohrer and the other man were later removed from the mine, but they could not be revived. 25390-2005
