James J. Gallagher, 21, student, helped to save Arthur J. McCarron, aged 21, student, from drowning, Misquamicut, Rhode Island, September 18, 1968. While swimming in the Atlantic Ocean, Gallagher and another young man were carried seaward and, unable to make progress toward shore because of the current, they called for help. Gallagher entered the water and swam through the surf to McCarron, who had been carried out farther than the other man. McCarron, who was 600 feet from shore, had swallowed water and was nearly exhausted. He took hold of the shoulders of Gallagher, who was submerged briefly and swallowed After trying without success to tow McCarron toward the beach, Gallagher then supported him; and they did not drift any farther seaward. A youth paddled a. surfboard to the other-man, and together they then proceeded to McCarron and Gallagher. The three men held to the surfboard. In about 10 minutes two boats arrived and took the three men and the youth back to the beach.
