James J. Hand saved Jacob M. Kintzel from drowning, Paradise, Pennsylvania, August 3, 1926. While Kintzel, 19, farmhand, was swimming with waterwings in a cove in the shore of Lake Hall, the waterwings became deflated when he was 60 feet from shore. He threshed in water 15 feet deep. Hand, 19, student, who had left the water because of a cramp in his thigh, ran to the cove and swam 60 feet to Kintzel. Kintzel grabbed his arm, and both went under the surface momentarily. Hand jerked free and then took hold of Kintzel and swam toward shore. When they were 15 feet from shore, a man swam from shore and pulled Kintzel from Hand. After a struggle, during which all were momentarily submerged, Hand took hold of one of the two clinging to each other and swam with them to a point within eight feet of shore. Hand then called that he could do nothing more, and, swimming six feet farther, he collapsed at the water’s edge. He revived in a few minutes. Another swimmer took Kintzel to shore, and the other man swam to shore. 26664-2204
