James J. Houlihan, 46, foreman, helped attempt to save Michael Muldoon, 40, from suffocation, New York, New York, August 14, 1908. Muldoon was overcome by gas at the bottom of a 16-foot manhole. Houlihan and another man went to his rescue but were themselves overcome. A man then descended, protected only by a handkerchief tied over his nose, and tied a rope around Houlihan, who was pulled out. 3091-243
