James Jerry Bacon died attempting to save Eugene Carroll from drowning, Groveland, Georgia, September 6, 1971. Carroll, 19, laborer, swam 100 feet across the Canoochee River and then started to swim back but became tired and called for help. Bacon, 21, welder, entered the water and swam to Carroll, who was at midstream. They were submerged briefly. With Bacon pushing Carroll ahead of him, they moved to within 40 feet of the bank where Carroll sank. Bacon then also went under. Neither reappeared. Their bodies were recovered later.
