James L. Hoban III saved Daniel P. Lynch from drowning, Chincoteague, Virginia, July 7, 1985. Lynch, 20, struggled in the Atlantic Ocean about a mile from shore. Hoban, 33, office manager, observed Lynch’s plight, and, despite the fact that he was recovering from hand surgery, obtained an air mattress and swam to Lynch. He pushed Lynch onto the mattress, then swam back to shore, towing the mattress. Hoban was exhausted and required oxygen, but he recovered.
