James L. Smith, 36, puddler, saved Frances R. Hetrick, 2, from burning, Sistersville, West Virginia, October 28, 1909. Breaking away from men who tried to restrain him, after two or three men had failed to enter, Smith crawled through a doorway, under a blast of heat and smoke and occasional flames, into the hall of a cottage and then into the adjoining living room, which was dense with smoke. He grasped the child, who had been left there. Smith groped his way back to the open door, dragging the child with him, and when he reached the open air, collapsed. He soon revived. His hands and arms and the back of his head were burned. The child sustained no burns. 4384-401
