James Mellen saved Peter S. Norman from an impending explosion, Sandon, British Columbia, May 24, 1973. In a rock tunnel in an underground mine, one of three lighted charges of dynamite went off, injuring Norman, 42. Mellen, 35, miner, also was knocked down by the explosion. He started to leave but, noting that Norman was not following, returned to the latter. As Mellen was carrying Norman away from the blast area, a second explosion occurred; and before they reached the tunnel entrance the third charge went off. Norman recovered.
