James Morad saved Barbara J. Jensen from burning, Burbank, California, May 12, 1994. Ms. Jensen, 56, was trapped inside an automobile after it collided with a tractor-trailer on an interstate highway. Flames erupted on the back of the car, which was wedged partially underneath the trailer, and flames spread to the trailer. Morad, 35, traveling on the same highway, saw the wreckage and stopped at the scene, where he learned that Ms. Jensen remained inside her car. Morad crawled underneath the burning trailer to get to the car. He reached through the window of the driver’s door, freed Ms. Jensen from the wreckage, then pulled her out of the car and lowered her to the pavement. He dragged her from underneath the trailer moments before the car was engulfed by flame. Both Morad and Ms. Jensen received minor injures.
