James 0. Ford, 11, schoolboy, saved Donald E. Barteck and Dennis L. Struchen, 7 and 8, respectively, from being struck by an automobile, Niagara Falls, New York, October 28, 1964. Donald and Dennis reached a school crossing at an intersection of a six-lane thoroughfare and started across after a woman guard had halted traffic in five of the lanes. Neither they nor the woman noticed a sedan approaching in the sixth lane alongside the curbing while traveling at approximately 45 miles an hour. James, who was six feet behind the two boys, saw the automobile and noted that it was not slowing for the intersection. James ran 12 feet to just ahead of Donald and Dennis, entering the path of the oncoming sedan. With his arms outstretched to prevent the boys from moving any farther over the crossing, James leaned backward against Donald, forcing him back against Dennis. The sedan entered the intersection at undiminished speed. Just before reaching the boys the driver swerved the automobile, which passed within 18 inches of James and sped from the scene.
