James P. Smith, 29, brakeman, sustained fatal injuries attempting to save James H. McGrail, 62, and Michael Fox, 45, bargemen, from being killed by a train, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, February 16, 1924. McGrail and Fox stepped onto a track without noticing a train of cars that was being backed toward them at a speed of 3 m.p.h. Smith, walking beside the head car, shouted to them without effect and then ran 10 or 12 feet around the front end of the car onto the track and gave a push against one of the men. Either Fox or McGrail resisted him, and the three men fell and were struck by the car. Fox was instantly killed, and McGrail died soon after. Smith died of his injuries a month later. 24066-1923
