James R. Flaherty helped to save Thomas L. Gemmill and three others from burning, Kitchener, Ontario, July 28, 1972. In a night-time accident, Gemmill, 21, cable splicer, and three other persons in a two door sedan were injured and knocked unconscious; and fire broke out at the front end of the vehicle. Flaherty, 45, service station supervisor, ran to the sedan and pulled Gemmill part way out through a window. After Gemmill had been fully removed, Flaherty went to the open door on the opposite side of the sedan. Flames appeared on the floor as he partially removed the driver, who was caught in some way. When the driver was free, Flaherty reached into the rear compartment and pulled a third man onto the front seat, from where he was removed. Flaherty then lifted a young woman from the rear compartment. Soon after she had been pulled the sedan, the flames increased. Gemmill and the others recovered from their injuries. 52837-6015
