James R. Smay, 16, schoolboy, saved Frances J. Painter, 2, from being killed by a train, Curwensville, Pennsylvania, March 13, 1946. Frances wandered onto a sharply curving track on which a freight train was approaching at a speed of 28 m.p.h. When the locomotive was within 1,000 feet of her, James got out of a slowly moving school bus at a point 300 feet from Frances and ran toward her. Reaching the track, James thrust one foot against the rail, leaned forward, and lifted Frances, the locomotive, which then was moving at a reduced speed of six m.p.h., being within three feet of them. As he lifted Frances, James pivoted and ran from the track, barely clearing the locomotive. 40643-3452
