James S. Ashcraft, 60, farmhand, rescued Mattie L. Allphin, 9, and S. Blanche, 9, and Thelma L. Alexander, 8, from a runaway, Crittenden, Kentucky, August 7, 1913. A horse ran away with a light wagon on which the three girls were. Ashcraft ran to meet the horse, which was running at top speed, and struck it with a heavy stick. The horse veered into a fence, and the children were thrown out of the wagon but were not injured. As he struck the horse, Ashcraft was struck by a shaft. He fell and was run over by the wagon. He was unconscious for two hours and was disabled for 42 days but recovered. 11607-1255
