James Schmitt rescued Bryan Moshinski from assault, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, December 1, 1989. When Bryan, 15, left a school dance, he was beaten and kicked to the street by a group of assailants outside the school. Waiting nearby to give Bryan and others a ride home, Schmitt, 19, college student, immediately ran to Bryan and began to pull the assailants off him. One of the assailants, who was armed with a baseball bat, struck Schmitt in the head from behind, knocking him unconscious. Other assailants then turned from Bryan and attacked Schmitt. The assailants fled. Bryan was treated at the hospital for bruises and a slight concussion, and he recovered. Schmitt was hospitalized in critical condition with multiple skull fractures, fractured ribs, a collapsed right lung, an injured right eye, in which he lost vision, and other injuries.
