James Schwalbe helped to rescue Kari A. Swenson from assault, Big Sky, Montana, July 16, 1984. Miss Swenson, 22, was jogging in Gallatin National Forest when she was abducted by two armed men, who then kept her chained to a tree overnight in their remote camp. Early the next morning, Schwalbe, 30, landscaper, and his partner, members of a search party, came upon the camp. Despite warnings by the abductors to stay away, Schwalbe entered the camp to help Miss Swenson, who had been shot by one of the abductors. When the other abductor aimed his rifle at Schwalbe’s partner, Schwalbe attempted to grab it, but the partner was shot and killed. Schwalbe ran to his partner as that abductor was reloading his rifle. Schwalbe ran for help. Left behind when the abductors fled, Miss Swenson was rescued by police who were led to the scene by Schwalbe. She was hospitalized for her wound, and she recovered. 60641-6962
