James T. Clayton, 38, carpenter, died attempting to save Harriet E. Letts, 10, from drowning, Long Branch, New Jersey, July 19, 1926. While she was wading in the Atlantic Ocean, Harriet was carried by the current into deep water 75 feet from shore. Clayton, who wore clothing, jumped from a jetty that extended 100 feet from shore and swam 25 feet to Harriet. Clayton and Harriet were carried by a strong current farther from shore around the end of the jetty, and both were drowned. 26428-2071
