James V. Pastorius saved Leslie E. Groesbeck from drowning, Monmouth Beach, New Jersey, October 16, 1971. Leslie, 16, high-school student, fell from a boat into deep water in the Shrewsbury River and floated inert face down 600 feet from the nearest bank. James, 17, high-school student, jumped from a nearby boat, swam to Leslie, and lifted his face from the water. Although Leslie greatly outweighed him, James began towing him toward the bank. After swimming 175 feet despite his heavy attire, James found footing in wadable water and took Leslie the rest of the way to the bank. Leslie revived and recovered.
