James Vincent Fleming, 17, plasterer’s apprentice, saved Thomas A. Radcliffe, Jr., 8, from drowning, Boston, Massachusetts, March 4, 1923. While playing on the ice on Dorchester Bay, Thomas broke through and fell into deep water 90 feet from shore. James, fully clothed, ran on the ice to the hole. As he stooped and reached toward Thomas, the ice broke, and he went under the ice. He caught hold of Thomas and got clear of the ice, and after the ice broke under his weight several times, he rested with his elbow on the ice. He maintained himself and Thomas for 10 minutes while men made several attempts to reach them with a rope. They were finally drawn out of the water upon safe ice and taken to a hospital, where James was confined for three days. 23185-2054
