Jane Schubert Clarke, 12, schoolgirl, saved Elizabeth P. Stevenson, 13, from drowning, Woodstock, New Brunswick, July 20, 1928. While Elizabeth was swimming in the Meduxnekeag River, she became tired and bobbed up and down in water six feet deep 70 feet from the bank. Jane swam 20 feet to her, and Elizabeth, who was hysterical, clasped her around the neck. Jane put her arm around Elizabeth’s waist, and they were submerged briefly. While Elizabeth retained her hold, Jane swam and drifted 70 feet to wadable water. They were assisted to the bank.
