Janet L. F. De Kett died attempting to save Jill D. Karn from suffocation, Leslie, Michigan, July 8, 1983. Jill, 13, was spending the night at the De Kett residence when an electrical fire broke out. Janet, 12, student., alerted her parents, then fled to the front porch with her father. On learning that Jill was apparently still in the house, Janet’s father crawled inside to search for her, but intense smoke and heat forced him back out. Unbeknown to her father, Janet also re-entered the house for Jill. Both girls were overcome by smoke and died.
