Janice B. McMahon attempted to save Dolores Clifton from drowning, Pulaski, Michigan, March 12, 1924. Dolores, 11, broke through porous ice on a pond into deep water 40 feet from the bank. Janice, 12, schoolgirl, who could not swim, hurried toward her, and the ice broke under Janice when she had gone eight feet and was within a few feet of Dolores. Both clung to the ice. A boy then ran from the bank and pulled Janice upon the ice and took her to safe ice. The boy then crawled on the ice to Dolores, but the ice broke under him, and both were drowned. 27171-2114
