Jared Moore rescued Marvin and Janice Junop from drowning, Killaloe, Ontario, February 24, 2024. Janice Junop struggled in icy water after her snowmobile entered an opening in the ice on Round Lake and sank 38 feet to the bottom. Her husband Marvin had made it across the opening on his snowmobile and turned around to go back to help her. About half a mile away, Moore and his mother were out walking on the thick lake ice when they saw Janice’s machine plunge into the water and sink, leaving her in the water. While his mother ran to her cottage on the shore to find a rope, Moore sprinted to the scene and, together with Marvin, shouted to Janice to swim to the edge of the ice. Standing on ice about 3 inches thick, he and Marvin tossed a rope from Marvin’s snowmobile to Janice, but she was too cold to grab it. Marvin then jumped in, swam to Janice and pushed her towards the edge. Moore knelt down on the ice and pulled her out and dragged her to safety. He then returned to the edge of the ice and pulled Marvin out. Janice suffered from hypothermia but recovered. Marvin and Moore were not injured.
