Jarvis H. Stromberg saved Mary K. and Maureen J. Brennan, aged 32 and 9, respectively, and attempted to save Thomas J. Brennan, 49, storekeeper, from drowning, Mission Beach, California, August 15, 1939. In darkness and fog Maureen and her parents got into unwadable water at the outer end of a jetty in Mission Bay, and the three drifted farther from the jetty and the shore in a current of two m.p.h. Brennan held Maureen with both arms around her waist, but Mrs. Brennan was separated from them. Partly clothed, Stromberg, 25, lumber company secretary, waded from shore and then swam 140 feet to Mrs. Brennan, who was floating on her back. Holding her with one arm, he swam 20 feet to Brennan and Maureen and put his other arm around them. Guided by a dim light and voices on the jetty, Stromberg stroked with his legs and moved slowly and with great effort 70 feet toward the jetty. Maureen repeatedly pushed her father’s head under the surface, and each time Stromberg raised his arm until Brennan’s head was above the surface. Stromberg became fatigued and called for help, and a boat was rowed to him. Maureen and her mother took hold of the gunwale. Stromberg held Brennan and took hold of the boat, and all were taken to the jetty. Brennan could not be revived. 38007-3155
