Jason L. Nelson attempted to save Evelyn L. Sharrard from burning, Brown City, Michigan, November 16, 1940. Mrs. Sharrard, 29, poured kerosene in a stove in the kitchen of a frame house; and an explosion occurred, her clothing catching fire. From outside Nelson, 65, farmhand, entered the kitchen; and while he was looking for something with which to smother the flames on Mrs. Sharrard’s clothing, she took hold of him around his chest. He broke her hold, but she brushed his shoulders with grabbing motions, and he was burned seriously. Mrs. Sharrard’s husband then reached the room from outside, got hold of Mrs. Sharrard, and pulled her out of the house. Nelson went out through another room. Mrs. Sharrard died of burns three and a half hours later. Nelson sustained burns on his face, throat, shoulders, and hands and was confined to a hospital for 15 weeks. His hands were badly crippled. 39559-3292
