Jasper N. Brannan, 31, park crew foreman, rescued Hugh Haney, 25, machine operator, from electric shock, Lubbock, Texas, November 29, 1956. When Haney moved a portable ladder truck from which be had been pruning trees in a park, the extended aluminum ladder came into contact with a high-tension wire carrying 22,000 volts of electricity. Current was grounded through the ladder and the metal parts of the truck. Haney dropped the metal tongue of the truck to the ground and fell unconscious on top of it. Smoke and sparks rose from Haney’s clothing as Brannan descended from the tree where he was working and ran 20 feet to him. Brannan seized the seat of Haney’s loose coveralls and pulled him from the truck without experiencing shock. Grasping one of the rubber tires on the truck, Brannan moved the vehicle away from the wire. Haney sustained multiple third-degree burns, his shoes and clothing were scorched, and his heart was affected. He was hospitalized 54 days and recovered. 44008-4125
