Jean C. Swedberg died helping to save an indeterminate number of persons from burning, Merritt, British Columbia, September 3, 1974. At night, when fire broke out in a two-story hotel, Mrs. Swedberg, 48, hotel desk clerk, went to the second floor and began pounding on doors and shouting warnings as flames and heat increased rapidly. All of the second-floor guests escaped except one man, whose body was found in the hall after firemen had extinguished the flames that demolished the hotel. The body of Mrs. Swedberg was found in a second-floor room.
