Jeanette Sterling Rogers, 12, schoolgirl, rescued James R. McGarrity, 20 months, from a fatal fall, Utica, New York, February 19, 1930. James, who weighed 31 pounds, crawled out of a window on the second floor of a house and clung a moment to the window sill 15 feet above the ground. A concrete post, which was one of the supports of a retaining wall three feet high, was two feet four inches out from a point below the window. Jeanette, who was in poor health and frail, ran 30 feet and stood close to the post and extended her arms, waiting for James to fall. He fell in a horizontal position, his head or shoulders and his legs striking her arms. Jeanette was slightly unbalanced by the impact and could not keep James from failing to the ground, but she had broken his fall, and he was not injured.
