Jeffrey A. Smart helped to save Richard D. DeMoura, Sr., from assault, Boston, Massachusetts, May 6, 1986. DeMoura, 54, was sitting in his parked truck when a man armed with a handgun opened the door, got inside, and demanded the keys to the vehicle. When DeMoura refused, the gunman threatened to kill him. From his truck parked nearby, DeMoura’s son ran to help his father, as did Smart, 25, carpenter. Smart grabbed the gunman from behind and wrestled with him. The gunman shot Smart in the abdomen, then fired at DeMoura and his son but missed. He fled. Smart was hospitalized for his gunshot wound, and he recovered.
