Jeffrey Allen Quigley saved Amos Gates from burning, Hampton, Virginia, April 19, 1989. Gates, 83, was inside his one-story, wood-frame house when fire erupted in the living room. At work nearby, Quigley, 28, service station attendant, was alerted to the fire and went to the scene. After ascertaining that Gates was still in the house, Quigley entered and, following the sound of Gates’s voice, crawled about 30 feet through a smoke-filled hall, passing the burning living room en route. Finding Gates at the doorway of the bedroom in the rear of the dwelling, Quigley pulled him to the floor and dragged him from the house. Gates required hospital treatment for effects of the fire.
