Jeffrey C. Bennett died attempting to save Lucosha A. Garner from being struck by a train, Sacramento, California, July 3, 1984. When her parents’ car stalled on the track of a railroad crossing, Lucosha, 4, was trapped in the back seat by her foot, which was wedged. As a train approached, Bennett, 21, retail manager, left his car, which was stopped at the crossing, and ran to the Garner vehicle, where he attempted to free Lucosha. Despite warnings of the train’s approach, Bennett remained at the car, which was struck by the train. Lucosha was thrown from the car and received minor injuries.
