Jeffrey E. Terrian died after helping to save a girl from drowning, Carlsbad, California, August 31, 1996. A 12-year-old girl playing in the Pacific Ocean became separated from her boogie board and was pulled out by the current into water beyond her depth. She struggled to tread water. Terrian, 41, salesman, in waist-deep water not far from the girl, went to her and grasped her by the arm. They were joined shortly by the girl’s father, who responded from the beach. Terrian passed the girl to her father, who returned her, with difficulty, to shore. Terrian shortly disappeared from view, then was found, unconscious, minutes later by others, who returned him to shore. He had drowned.
