Jeffrey G. Chipley died attempting to help rescue Kent R. Latimer from suffocation, Estevan, Saskatchewan, November 11, 1987. Kent, 16, lost consciousness in the oxygen-deficient atmosphere of an abandoned mine that he and his companions were exploring. Alerted, Jeffrey, 17, high school student, immediately entered the mine and went to Kent. He and another boy managed to move Kent closer to the mine entrance before Jeffrey collapsed. Rescuers who were called to the scene entered the mine and removed Kent and Jeffrey. Kent required hospitalization for his injuries, but Jeffrey could not be revived.
