Jens A. Schmidt died attempting to save Michael J. Tully from drowning, Tottenville, New York, October 10, 1925. Tully, 64, retired policeman, paddled a punt to a post in Raritan Bay 150 feet from shore to get a rowboat fastened there. He lost control of the punt when a strong wind caught it, and he drifted in the punt farther from shore. Schmidt, 42, carpenter, put out from shore in a rowboat and reached the punt 500 feet from shore. Tully got into Schmidt’s boat, and Schmidt tried to row back to shore, but they were carried farther out by the wind, which was blowing almost 70 m.p.h. The waves were four to six feet high. Men in a launch made an unsuccessful effort to find them, but the boat was never seen again. The bodies of the two men were found more than a week later at far distant points from each other. 25782-2027
