Jerome F. Hempfling died attempting to save Richard J. Hupp from drowning, Zanesville, Ohio, May 28, 1942. While swinging out over the water on a cable, Richard, 12, schoolboy, who could not swim, fell into the Muskingum River 10 feet from the bank, where the water was five feet deep. Jerome, 12, schoolboy, who was clothed and was but a poor swimmer, waded from the bank and then swam six feet to Richard, who took hold of him and threw both arms around his neck. They were submerged briefly, drifted four feet face to face, and then sank and were drowned. 39521-3276
