Jerry Allen Seamster saved a child from burning, Farmville, Virginia, March 4, 1969. Four small children were unattended in a bedroom in a one-story section of a frame dwelling when fire broke out in the adjoining living room. Noticing flames at the living room window, Seamster, 27, railroad brakeman, and two other men ran to the porch of the dwelling. Children could be heard screaming, but entrance through the living room was blocked by flames. While the other two men ran to the side of the house, Seamster went to summon firemen. Three children had been removed from the dwelling by the time Seamster returned and learned that a fourth still was inside. In dense smoke, Seamster crawled into the kitchen and thence into the bedroom, where flames covered one wall and part of the ceiling. He located the bed and the fourth child. Feeling effects of the smoke, Seamster crawled from the dwelling with the child. Soon afterward the bedroom ceiling collapsed.
