Jerry B. Skinner died attempting to save Lisa K. Hill and Judy L. Richardson from drowning, Carlsbad, California, March 13, 1983. While playing in the surf of the Pacific Ocean, Lisa, 12, and Judy, 13, were drawn into the strong current and turbulence created by effluent from a nearby power plant. Attracted by their screams, Skinner, 32, automobile mechanic, ran to the water as Lisa and Judy were swept past two jetties channeling the effluent. Swimming through heavy turbulence, Skinner reached the girls and pushed them toward shore before he submerged and did not surface. Lisa and Judy were helped to shore by others. Skinner drowned.
