Jerry Ingram saved Ladd C. Caldwell from burning, Jackson, Tennessee, October 19, 1996. Ladd, 5, was playing in a farm trailer when fire broke out nearby and ignited the trailer’s load of packed cotton. Sitting atop the trailer on a break, Ingram, 49, farm employee, immediately jumped into the trailer, ran to Ladd, and, with flames spreading quickly, picked him up and lifted him to the top of the trailer. Ladd dropped to his father below. Ingram then climbed up the side of the trailer and, his clothing aflame, dropped to the ground. After he extinguished the flames on him, he was taken to the hospital, where he was detained 86 days for treatment of second- and third-degree burns to 60 percent of his body.
